Larry Francis, son of Mr. and Mars. William J. Francis, 1616 Palm, was one of the three winners in the Indian Dance Contest held during the Fellowship Conference of the Boy Scout's Honorary Order of the Arrow. One hundred sixty boys, representing the seven brotherhoods from Southern California, attended the conference held at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station from April 6 through 8.
During the conference the scouts attended daily workshops and evening campfire programs. The dance contest took place at a campfire program. The boys were judged on authenticity of dance, the foot work, costuming and showmanship.
Larry Francis, Ernie Wakeham, and Chuck Williams were declared winners in a tie. Francis is an eighth grade student at Tustin Elementary. Larry and the other boys in his troop were able to take the Indian dancing lessons in connection with their scout work, through the help of Ralph Gates who transported the boys to heir classes in Garden Grove.
The leader of the seven councils, Cecil F. Fife, commented that the conference was a success and expressed his thanks to the staff at the El Toro Marine Station, who were perfect hots and to the host lodge, Ahwahnee.
