Area 12-A

Area 12-A1 was the successor to Area U Section A. In fact, after Area U was split into 3 sections, the term Area 12-A began to be used 2 years prior to the Order of the Arrow’s 1948 full integration into the BSA. The original Area included preexisting Lodges, as well as Councils that were forming new Lodges.

At the 1955 Area 12-A Conference, the Western area was split into Area 12-E and the Eastern area would be organized at some point into Area 12-F. The rest of Southern California remained in Area 12-A.

Area 12-A would be reorganized as Section W4B during the 1973 reorganization from 12 Regions to 6 Regions. The boundaries of the new Section exactly mapped the post-1955 boundaries of Area 12-A.

Area 12-A saw huge growth over it’s existence. Conferences (Conclaves) grew from several dozen attendees in the 1950s to as many as 850 at some Conferences in the 1960s. This mapped the explosive growth of the Order of the Arrow in the West at this time.

  1. Also sometimes written as Area XII-A
