San Diego County Council # 49 (1921 – 1992)

San Diego County Council # 49 evolved from the second-class San Diego Council starting in 1921.

On January 1, 1993, it merged with Desert Trails Council to form Desert-Pacific Council, which was renamed the current San Diego-Imperial Council.

Timeline

  • 1917: Ellwood E. Barley becomes the first Scout Executive.
  • 1918: San Diego Council holds its first Summer Camp in Del Mar. The annual Summer Camp experience would continue at this location for 3 years.
  • 1919: Boy Scouts begin using the site that would become Camp Balboa and the Council Service Center. In December, a reference was made in the San Diego Sun to “San Diego’s first Eagle Scout,” but the Eagle date and identify of the person is not currently known.
  • 1920: Earliest known Eagle Scouts from San Diego County are David Wilt and Paul Heiser.
  • 1921: San Diego County Council moves its Summer Camp experience to Palomar Mountain, in the Doane Valley area. This would continue through 1922.
  • 1923: The next San Diego County Council Summer Camp is held at Hulburd Grove near Descanso.
  • 1924: The final rotating location Summer Camp was held at Fort Rosecrans. E.E. Barley listed as Scout Executive of San Diego Council1.
  • 1925: Summer camp moves to Camp Fletcher, near Cuyamaca Lake, on property donated by Colonel Ed Fletcher.
  • 1935: E.E. Barley listed as Scout Executive of San Diego Area Council2.
  • 1940: Earl B. Moore is hired as Scout Executive.
  • 1946: Harvey Atherton becomes the first Silver Antelope recipient in San Diego County.
  • 1950: The Order of the Arrow comes to San Diego County Council with the chartering of Ashie Lodge # 436.
  • 1951: Dan O. Henry is hired as Scout Executive.
  • 1958: Mataguay Scout Ranch is purchased at a cost of $ 658,947.00.
  • 1961: Dan O. Henry leaves San Diego to become the Scout Executive of Greater New York Councils. John Ackermann is hired as Scout Executive.
  • 1962: Harold “Hal” Pote receives the Silver Antelope Award.
  • 1967: Lester Bond receives the Silver Antelope Award.
  • 1976: Storrs H. Smith replaces John Ackermann as Scout Executive.
  • 1977: Julius Fink receives the Silver Antelope Award.
  • 1981 (est.): Ron Brundage is hired as Scout Executive, previously serving Old Baldy Council. He would serve through the Council merger.
  • 1993: Merger completed with Desert Trails Council to form Desert-Pacific Council.

Notable

Future USC President Fred Fagg Jr. (1896 – 1981) was an early member of San Diego Troop 1.
