Camp Letten

During 1924 the San Fernando Valley Council’s first camp, referred to as the “Camp at Lake Elizabeth”, was readied for its first summer season. It was located in Elizabeth Canyon adjacent to Lake Elizabeth. In 1932 it was renamed Camp Fred Letten in memory of the council’s Scout Executive. Fred Letten was taken to the hospital on the evening of December 9, 1931 suffering from an acute attack of appendicitis. He underwent an operation at the Valley Hospital and initial indications following surgery were that he would soon regain his health. However, complications developed during the following few days and he succumbed on Saturday night, December 19, 1931, age 49. In 1926-1927 the camp was called Camp Ku-Yet-Tah, an Indian name.

Camp Letten operated into the 1950’s. The State of California long-range plan to create Castaic Lake resulted in Camp Letten being underwater.

Hughes Lake, referred to before 1924 as West Elizabeth Lake, is a lake located directly on the San Andreas Fault the northern Sierra Pelona Mountains, in Los Angeles County, southern California.
