Camp Evans Memories

“As a Scout/Explorer, I participated in a number of overnight camps, Pow Wows, Scout-o-ramas, and training events at Camp Evans.  It was located at the base of Mt. Rubidoux on the Riverside side of the Santa Ana river bottom just prior to heading into Rubidoux.  The events which still stand out were the annual lighting of the trials for the Easter Sunrise service.

Scouts and Explorers would gather at Evans starting about 11 PM.  We would get hot dogs, doughnuts, oranges, and hot chocolate.  No one ever went hungry.  While the Scouts were gathering at Evans, the JROTC units from Poly HS were already on the road leading to the top.  After the Scouts were placed on the trail, sometime between 2-3:30 AM, sometimes there were orange fights between the Scouts and the JROTC.  Great fun.  In any case, the Scouts made sure that people hiking up the three (?) trails towards the top did so safely.”
